Although it was designed in the early 80s, the HANS device wasn't widely used in motorsports until 2003. This U shaped device sits flat on your chest with the top of the device sitting on your neck. A strap with hooks attaches to the anchour mounts on your helmet; making sure that hyperextension of the neck does not happen. This clever design allows you to have free movement of your neck but prevents excessive movements that would lead to grave injuries. The introduction of this technology lead companies to develop their own devices; with Stand21 developing their state-of-the-art FHR (Frontal Head Restraint) devices. Their carbon fiber construction makes them incredibly lightweight without sacrificing strength and durability; with the Featherlite FHR weighing at only 310 grams and being the FHR of choice for some of the world's fastest drivers.
