Description

Jo Gartner's racing suit has been well looked after but there are a number of battle scars from the races in which the Austrian competed in.

History

In the 1980’s, Jo Gartner was regarded as a rising star in the world of motorsport. Between 1980 and 1984, Gartner competed in 37 European Formula Two Championship races, with the highlight of his time in the series coming at the Pau Street Circuit which saw the Austrian take victory in 1983.

In 1984, Gartner made his Formula 1 debut at the San Marino Grand Prix, driving for the Osella Squadra Corse team. The 30 year old qualified on his debut despite being in an underpowered and out dated car and his performance in Imola earned him a drive for the final seven races that season.

The following year, Gartner pushed to get a full-time drive for the 1985 F1 season but he lost out to drivers bringing more financial backing and the Austrian moved across to sportscar and endurance racing.

Sadly, Jo Gartner was never able to exploit his full potential as at the age of 32, the popular Austrian was killed at the 1986 Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race driving the Porsche 962C.
