The little man in the cowboy hat, Arturo Merzario was one of the most flamboyant characters of the motorsport world. The Italian drove for some of the most famous teams such as Scuderia Ferrari and Frank Williams Racing and also competed in the 1970 and 1973 Le Mans 24 Hour endurance races, with a best finish of second place in his last appearance,

History

In 1976, his fifth Formula 1 season, Merzario began the season with the Ovoro Team March outfit and managed a season best result of 9th place at the French Grand Prix. However, for the last eight races, the Italian joined Walter Wolf Racing.

Merzario’s crash helmets always consisted of a white background with red accents and the Italian tricolour, which runs along the back behind the famous prancing horse, which he always wore on his crash helmet, even after he stopped racing for Ferrari in 1972.
